Essential Fatty Acids – The Benefits

Have you heard about the health benefits of fatty acids? Now I am not talking about just any fatty acid, I am talking about Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). These are the fats you need to keep your body healthy, not the fats that can cause health problems.

The fats that can cause health problems are solid at room temperature, and can led to high cholesterol, clogging of your arteries and heart attacks or stroke. These are called saturated fats that mainly come from animal fats and some vegetables. If you want to be healthy, stay away from these.

Now EFAs are liquid at room temperature, and do not clog your arteries, but help keep them clear. These are called unsaturated fats and mainly come from vegetables or cold-water fish. Plus these EFAs help lower your blood pressure, helps keep you mentally focused, minimizes Type 1 and 2 diabetes, prevents some cancers, and keeps your cholesterol in check. So where can I get these EFAs?

The beneficial EFAs are found in cold-water fish such as salmon, trout, sardines and anchovies. What these fats provide is EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These are used by your body’s cells to help build cell walls that allow them easier access to nutrients and easier discharge of wastes.

You can also get these from vegetables, but it is in the form of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). This ALA needs to be converted to DHA before it is beneficial. This is helpful, but not very efficient.

So I prefer to get the benefits directly from DHA and EPA rather than wait for the conversion from ALA.

So if you pump up your diet with cold-water fish, you will get your required amount of EFAs. I do not know about you, but I cannot eat a lot of fish, plus I am concerned about mercury contamination from these fish. I found fatty acid supplements that provide the needed EFAs with the desired DHA and EPA. These are found in Omega – 3 fish oil supplements. Just by taking a couple of capsules a day I get my required dose of EFAs and do not need to eat all that fish.

Essential fatty acids supplements can provide you the necessary health benefits to prevent such conditions as heart disease, heart attacks, stroke, high cholesterol, and other health problems. Plus they keep your blood pressure within the recommended bounds.
